Going Wide

This shouldn't be such a leap of faith, but with the Zon eating up close to 80% of the market share in the book world, going wide is a leap of faith. So, starting in two day, all of my books will wide, meaning they will be out of the Kindle Unlimited ecosystem.

Not going to lie, I am hesitant. Not because I make much money from KENP (pages read), but because I’m choosing ownership over convenience. I don't have the finances to tackle such a giant. I don’t think anyone does, so this isn’t about fighting Goliath as much as it is about basic ownership of my product a little more on my terms. I am diversifying instead of depending on one ecosystem.

Is the Zon currently the most fair when it comes to royalties? Yeah, it is. But, the indie in me says I deserve more of my hard earned money than .0007 per page read, or the percentage I get from a physical sale. Those were my words, my stories, my sweat and tears, all poured onto a page for the world to read. I'm not being selfish. I'm being protective of what's mine.

See, us indie writers have been trained to believe there’s only one place to stand. I reject that premise out right. BUT, and yes this is a big BUT, readers don’t care about the indie ecosystem struggle. Readers care about two things. They care about access, and they care about price (actually finding and purchasing the book they want to read without any friction or hassle). I totally get it. AND, I don’t blame them for not caring or understanding KU payout rates.

So, with my older books, The Animal In Us, Tiger Island, and Space Cheese, I’m choosing a business model that respects both my work and my readers. I’m not being forced into this, but it’s something I’m forcing myself to stand for. I hope you can understand the difference. I am not rebelling (well, maybe I am), I am building small fortresses everywhere.
